Research - Analysing Music Magazine - Front cover

This music magazines title and masterhead is called NME. The main image of this magazine is the rock artist who was formerly in the band Oasis, Noel Gallagher. This tells us that the target audience for this magazine is older teenagers and young adults. This music magazine is not known to be gender specific therefore both males and females read it. The artist is standing to the side yet facing the reader head on, his facial expression is very stern and serious which lets the audience know that he is serious about starting over and the creation of his new band. This reinforces the target audience as his new music again is for the same and new fans. The main image is a mid shot which makes the artist important, however is on the same level as the readers. Furthermore the magazine background is in a shadow however a spot light is shone on the artist therefore showing he is special and a star in the music business and of the magazine. It is also highlighting the fact that the artist is starring over. The masterhead presents the title in bold, red font which is easy for the reader to see. The artist's hair covers a partial part of the masterhead showing his dominance, this is making sure that the sole focus of the audience is on the artist himself. Text appears down the sell lines of the magazine which is red and white not only does this grab the attention of the audience but links in with the masterhead therefore encouraging and creating the colour scheme. This text is about other articles featuring within the magazine such as information about other artists in the same genre as the main article or other genres that may link to the type of target audience attracted to this magazine for example readers that also enjoy indie music. Moreover, the skyline presents information about another article and a band relaunching back into the music business, the colour scheme is carried through using red however it incorporates another colour which is black to stand out to the audience and to show the readers that the information is important and not to be missed. The particular feature also includes a small image so that the reader is reminded of the band they may have known from the music industry before. Anchorage text is also used down the sell lines just under the masterhead giving the audience an idea of what their main article is about. It includes a short quote from the interview that features the artist in the main image, this again is drawing attention to Noel Gallagher. A barcode is situated at the bottom of the magazine front cover, this will allow the check out tills in shops to scan the music magazine in the process of a purchase.
Overall, I think that this music magazine front cover is quite successful as its main article is featured well, the audience is attracted by the main image and the anchorage text letting them know that the artist is making his comeback with a brand new band.  The colour scheme stands out and will grab attention from anyone walking past and the use of unique text when presenting the quote is unusual which will also appeal to the reader. The first criticism I would say about this magazine is that it could include a few puffs on the front cover, this would let the audience know any additional information such as the latest issue of the music charts or information about subscription, again in can be used as a tool to catch the eye of the audience. My second criticism is the website should be on the front cover somewhere, it does not necessarily have to be big but would be useful for the readers if they wanted any other information about the magazine or has an opinion on an article that they could share online or provide the magazine with feedback on that article.
