Evaluation - Question 7

7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Evaluation - Question 6

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The programmes used:
Blogger
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe InDesign
PicMonkey
Flickr
Dell Webcam Central

The technologies used:
Sony Camera
IPhone
Blackberry
Scanner

Photoshop, InDesign and PicMonkey
These software programmes was the most important in constructing my media product as I used all three to edit, create, design and construct my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I had never used Photoshop or InDesign before therefore learning from the very beginning and at first found it very difficult to get used to. However once I had given myself time to play about with the different tools I became more familiar and got to grips with what I was using. I learnt how to import images, re size and position them. Along with organising text into columns and arranging different styles for the font. Photoshop and InDesign helped me by teaching me about layouts and size of the pages so that they were the same as real media products. I had previously used PicMonkey therefore knew the basics of how the programme works however producing my media product has given me more in depth knowledge about the site and I now feel comfortable with all the tools if I ever needed them in the future.

Blogger
To be able to publish my media product so that it could be seen and marked I used a site called www.Blogger.com. I was able to create an account where I could set up my blog from then on I was able to create posts publishing all the aspects of my coursework such as research, analysing, images, videos, links, construction and evaluation.

After using all these different software programmes and technologies to construct my media product I now feel that I have gained knowledge and experience by learning to use each one. Furthermore it has strengthened my skills and added to the ones I had already developed in ICT by allowing me to use a diverse range of tools that I did not know about before. I am glad I chose to use these programmes and technologies as I can now use them in future projects and have the ability to use them correctly therefore enabling my to produce the best media products I can.

Evaluation - Question 4

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience of my music magazine
After previously researching into the genre, image and artists/bands of my magazine I now know who my target audience is going to be, what they are likely to look like, where they shop, what music they listen to and what TV programmes they may be interested in.

The typical reader of my magazine would be quirky in their dress sense for example tie dye tees or polos, skinny jeans, brogues, boat shoes and dessert boots. The are likely to shop at Topshop and quaint shops which are found at places like Brick Lane. The would listen to indie music such as The Cribs, The vaccines and The Maccabees. The would also enjoy going to festivals such as reading. The TV programmes they might be interested in is Skins and This Is England. I think that this male would be interested in reading my magazine as it features the music that he listens to and gives him updates on the latest news according to the artist and bands in this genre. I also think he would enjoy reading my magazine as it gives information about festivals and you can purchase your festival tickets from my magazine.

The typical female reader of my magazine would again be quirky with their style wearing vintage dresses, high waisted shorts and skirts. The also like to have their make up quite natural and their hair isn't always perfect. The shops they would be interested in is Topshop, Miss Selfridge and boutiques down Brick Lane. They would also be interested in the same music as male readers of my magazine and the bands and artists in the genre of indie. You would also see the female readers at the same festivals and enjoy watching the same programmes as the males. I think that this female would be interested in reading my magazine as again it features all the music that she listens to and gives her the recent updates on the latest news according to the artist and bands in the indie genre. I also think she would enjoy reading my magazine as it gives her information about festivals dates and you can purchase your festival tickets from my magazine. Finally I think she will be interested as my magazine will feature all the newest trends for the festivals therefore she can begin planning her outfits and even purchase them from the site that my magazine has recommended.

Evaluation - Question 3

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

There are many media institutions I think will distribute my music magazine such as Bauer Media, InterMedia Partners and IPC Media. I would think these companies would distribute my magazine as they own other popular music magazines but none of my genre therefore creating a place in the market for my magazine and therefore it would be worthwhile for them to invest and distribute my magazine. The closet company that would produce my type of music magazine which is of the indie genre would be IPC Media as
they produce NME magazine, as my magazine is very similar to this. Shown below:

Furthermore, I think that IPC Media would be interested in my magazine as not only does it have the same genre and target audience as NME but has a different perspective as I have tried to broaden my target audience and have added conventions and elements that NME doe not necessarily have for example puffs and the main image of the main article to be on one page of the double page spread.  I would like my magazine to be distributed to many newsagents, music shops and supermarkets as I believe that my target audience would purchase from all of these locations.

Evaluation - Question 2

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups ?

These two images are very similar, the posture of both girls is leaning over the guitar as they are playing it looking focused as their facial expressions show that they are concentrating on where they put their fingers. Both girls are gesturing to be playing music however my image on the left is as the girl is trying to find her position where as the other seems effortless. The makeup is very similar as they are going for a natural look however have then both chose to wear a dark shade of lipstick. The angles are relatively different as my shot is taken from the center, very much head on whereas the picture on the right it has been taken at a slight angle to the right. The shot type in both images is a mid shot. The lighting if very different as the one on the right was taken in an out doors location, she is surrounded by nature where as my shot was taken indoors where there is very little light which is how I wanted the image reflected because it gave a vintage effect. The costume of the two images is very different one is dressed for summer where as the other for winter but showing the different type of clothing that is worn for this particular social group.
Overall, I think that these two images including all these elements are representing a social group of young people who are quite different and unique compared to other social groups, they are very  much into their music specifically acoustic guitar which I think reflects in my magazine.
I aimed my magazine at older teenagers and young adults of both genders, to reflect this I used a colour scheme that is not gender specific like Black, white, red and purple. I also included artists/bands of both genders for example my main feature Kelsey Jones, The vaccines, Olly Murs and The Courterneers to get across to my audience the type of genre I was aiming at which I think I done successfully. I took inspiration for NME magazine which also has the same target audience therefore took into consideration the layout, colours and features that they included and tried to present something similar in my magazine. I wanted to represent the genre as best I could reinforcing it through different elements and conventions so that my target audience would be interested in purchasing my magazine.

Evaluation - Question 1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)

Evidence:

Final Double Page Spread

Below is the final double page spread for my music magazine.

Here is the finished version of my music magazine double page spread. I am delighted with the end result especially after making changes due to audience feedback as it has improved. As you can see I have now included the page number to the other side of my double page spread. The artists name in the title was done using the front 'Bleeding cowboys' which was used in the contents page and front cover showing continuity and keeping the same house style. I enlarged the text so that it could be seen clearly and chose white, as it stood out against the mauve background and made the page look slightly different compared to the font cover and contents. For the rest of the text that appears on the page I used the font 'Marcelle script' as it makes the page look professional. I chose black to break up the page as if it was white it would look boring, I also chose red for the letters where a new paragraph started because it connotates its importance and grabs the audiences attention. To make the pages look organised I used the A2 format of columns to present the article making it look authentic. Furthermore, I also included text which appeared just under the smaller images giving a description of when they were taken as this is a convention of an existing magazine. I am pleased with the main image I had chosen to use for one of the pages in the double page spread taking inspiration from Q magazine as I think it represent the artist nicely and again captures the genre of music. For example, like the front cover the mise en scene such as clothing is typically what someone from the indie genre would wear. Moreover, I think that my target audience would be interested in my music magazine double page spread because I have included all the conventions of an existing magazine and focused on using the right features, mise en scene to get across the genre of indie and an authentic magazine double page spread.

Audience Feedback

I have shown media students both in year 13 and 12, my target audience and media teachers my last version of my music magazine double page spread as I wanted know what was good and bad so I could make adjustments for my final media piece. From looking over the feedback I received everyone commented on how they liked the main image with the quote printed above as it was one of the first things they had noticed, also that the article was presented nicely and looked organised. They continued to say how the use of different font types to tie in with the rest of the magazine was effective and made the pages look interesting. However the feedback did suggest that I include a page number on the main image which I will make sure I do.

Construction Of Double Page Spread

Below I have separated my double page spread into two pages which is main image and the article so I can show the developments to each side. I previously blogged the main image I was going to use as well as another image shown in three effects and why. I will explain with each screen grab what I have changed, edited and included. This was all done using three software programmes which were Photoshop, InDesign and Picmonkey so that I had a variety of tools to use and play around with. Additionally, to broaden my knowledge of using these programmes and constructing a magazine contents page.

Above is the first stage of developing my double page spread. As you can see, I have put the three smaller images at the top of the page which is mauve like the contents and front cover so that all the pages are interconnected showing continuity and keeping the same house style to make the article look more exciting, so the audience know the photo shoot was authentic and will catch their attention. I have positioned them at the top right as this would be the template for where I would put the title of the page and the article below.

Above is the second stage of creating my double page spread. As stated before I was going to use the smaller images as the template for placing the title of the page which I have done. For the 'A' I used the same font which is 'La Belle Avrore' as the 'A' in the text below the main image on the contents page, the font 'Marcelle script' for 'day in the life of' as this was used for most text on the contents and front cover. I then used the font 'Bleeding Cowboys' for the artists name which is used as the masterhead for the magazine as I wanted this to stand out and look important so the audience noticed who the article is about, also to do this I increased the size of the text. Furthermore, I went with the colour white for the text as it is a contrast to the mauve background again so it stands out. All of which showing how my magazine ties in together. Finally, I added text just under the smaller images which gives the audience a description of when the images were taken which is a convention of an existing magazine.

Above is the third developments to the double page spread. I have now added the logo of the magazine which is a black, square border with an 'R' in the font 'Bleeding Cowboys' same as the masterhead to represent the magazine throughout its pages, this logo also occurred at the top of the contents page reinforcing the magazines design and style. Next to this I included the page number, looking back to my contents page and flat plan to make sure I got the correct number, at the bottom of the page so the audience could easily find it. I also made the text red as I thought this would make the number even more clearer and showing the importance of getting the right page, another reason is because the contents page numbers were also in red therefore making sure that the magazine flowed. Additionally, I added the website address at the bottom of the page so that if the audience wanted to read more articles then they know it is available. The font is again in red so that it would be eye catching and connoting its importance, this also is another convention of an existing magazine.

Above is the fourth developments to my double page spread. I have now added the introduction text which explains to the audience where the interview was held, what the artist is up to and what we are going to be talking about/content of the article. I have used the font 'Marcelle script' as this was the main font used throughout the magazine therefore sticking to the house style, I used the colour white as this again tied in with the title, making it stand out. Lastly, I positioned the text just under the title so that the audience knew this was the introduction.
Introduction text:
Here we are joined by Kelsey Jones as we watch in anticipation her take part in yet another photo shoot scheduled in to her now busy life style. As Kelsey takes a break she is happy to spend a couple of minutes with us answering a few questions about her life since she found fame.

Above is the fifth stage of constructing to my double page spread. I have now added the first part of the article to the magazine, again using the same font of 'Marcelle script' as I wanted the page to look professional. I used the colour black as I wanted the title to stand out against the article but also wanted the page to look interesting therefore by using black the page does not look too busy. Finally I have positioned the text in the A2 format of columns which makes the page look organised, which will entice the audience into reading.
First part of the article text:
Recently it has been all about chart success and when Kelsey was going to win her next award however we wanted to know what it was like going from rags to riches. “It’s all been such a blur” announces Kelsey cheerfully, adjusting herself onto the set sofa. “The moment I realised I was considered famous (gestures with her hands so we know she is quoting the word famous) was when I walked out of my front door just to go to the local shops and I had paparazzi hiding in my bushes.” In the 16 months since Kelsey’s album, Shadow, was released she has been followed by paparazzi everywhere she goes yet still feels the same, normal, young girl from New Eltham.  As RIFF is conducting this interview on the set of a photo shoot we cannot help but think Kelsey must now be relaxed in front of the camera. “I can prepare myself for photo shoots, I have people to do my make-up, hair, style and I’m directed to pose by the photographer all seems quite easy compared to wearing your dressing gown opening the front door to collect the milk and a million cameras are flashing from all directions.” Which we all know can be the price of fame.

Above is the sixth stage of creating my double page spread. I have now added the rest of the article text to the page. Continuing with the same font, colour and format of columns for the same reasons as before. I had to make sure I lined up the text box to the previous one so that the columns looked neat, tidy and professional. Also I had to be careful with selecting what I wrote in the article as it had to be the right amount to fit onto the page without it looking busy.
Continued article Text:
So, we wanted to know how Kelsey has dealt with the good, the bad and the ugly of being in the public eye. “Don’t get me wrong I love it, it makes me happy, being able to produce my music and share it with the world and for them to actually enjoy it makes me feel humble however fame isn't all money and sparkles. Every part of your life is documented in the media I just wished I had some time to myself”.  We hope Kelsey carries on sharing her music, finds some private time and will speak to us again soon. Thank you from everyone at RIFF.

Above is the final developments to this side of the double page spread. I went back to the beginning of the text and enlarged the size of the first letter of the start of a new paragraph and subject shown above as the 'R' and 'S'. Furthermore, I changed the colour of the text so that it was clear to the audience when the next paragraph started, to look intriguing, to grab the audiences attention and to connote its importance. Finally, I went over the text of the page to make sure all spelling, punctuation and grammar was correct.

Above is the developments I made to the other side of the double page spread. After creating the article for the double page spread I then had to insert my main image into the software programme, which I then positioned next to the article making sure it was the same size and shape like I have seen in existing magazines shown below:

After this, I then picked out a memorable and controversial quote that would entice the audience into reading the article that I could place at the top of the main image. Furthermore, I choose to use 'Fame isn't all money and sparkles' as I thought this would attract the audience because many people believe that if you are famous you have to deal with everything that comes with it including bad press or the media invading your private life. Using the font 'Marcelle script' to flow with the rest of the page and white as the colour, grabbing the audiences attention and tying in with the title of the page. My double page spread had now come together, all I need to do is get audience feedback then I could make the final adjustments.

Final Contents Page

Below is my final music magazine contents page.

Here is the completed version of my music magazine contents page. I am happy with the final outcome. The title of my contents page was in the same font 'Bleeding cowboys' as my front cover therefore linking the two masterheads, I chose black as again this linked the front cover to the contents page and also contrasted to the background. For the rest of the text I used the font 'Marcelle script' as it is clearly seen by the audience and makes the page look organised. I chose to use red for the page number as this made sure that the audience noticed them and it connotes their importance, white for the text as this broke the page up from not looking busy and made it look professional and finally yellow this colour is vibrant which will attract the audiences attention o the advertisement. I am happy with the main image I had chosen to use for the contents page as it reflects the musicality of the artist and represents the genre. Moreover, adding the two smaller images to give information about other articles makes the page look authentic and adds something extra therefore looking exciting. Furthermore, I think that my target audience would be interested in my music magazine contents page because I have included all the conventions of an existing magazine contents pages and focused on making the page look clear and organised so that my audience are easily directed around the magazine.

Audience feedback

I have shown media students both in year 13 and 12, my target audience and media teachers my last version of my music magazine contents page as I wanted know what was good and bad so I could make adjustments for my final edition. From looking over the feedback I received everyone commented on how they liked the the use of more than one image and that they are or a different nature. Also that I used the two smaller images to introduce other features. They continued to say how they like the colour scheme and that the page looked professional and organised. The one criticism that I received was that the text was to small however this was because they looked at the contents page in the software programme but when it is printed they will be able to read it, I also do not want to change the text size as when it is printed it will be to large for the page and look messy.

Construction Of Contents Page

Below is six screen grabs showing the developments of my music magazine front cover. I previously blogged the main image I was going to use as well as two other smaller images that were going to also appear on the contents page and why. I will explain with each image what I have changed, edited and included. This was all done using three software programmes which were Photoshop, InDesign and Picmonkey so that I had a variety of tools to use and play around with. Additionally, to broaden my knowledge of using these programmes and constructing a magazine contents page.

Above is the first stage of creating my contents page. As you can see I have chosen a mauve background with shadowed edges to tie in with the main image on the front cover so that my magazine flows and shows continuity. Furthermore, I have also placed the main image and two smaller images into there positions. Now the images will act as my template so I know where to put my text.

Above is the second stage of construction. As you can see, I have included a logo at the top left hand of the page which is a black, square border with an 'R' inside this represents the magazines name therefore showing the audience its dominance of the magazine itself, I have also used the same font as the masterhead to reinforce this. Additionally, showing another existing magazine convention. Moreover, I have also using the same font 'Bleeding Cowboys' as the masterhead on the front cover, I have titled the contents page, again showing continuity.

Above is the third stage of creating the contents page. Using geometric shapes such as rectangles and squares, I have created the overlay and background for the subheadings of the contents page and for the advertisement which appears at the bottom of the page. I have used black so that the text will stand out and the red/pink colour for the advertisement which was used for the puffs on the front cover so that the colour scheme is carried through.

Above is the fourth developments to the contents page. I have now added the subheading titles which are in a white text so that they stand out against their backgrounds and to the audience so that it is clear to read. I used the font is 'Marcelle script' as this was one of the fonts used on the front cover. Furthermore, I have added text to the advertisement offering my audience 'A years free subscription. Apply now!' which should prompt them into subscribing to the magazine and reading through to find that offer. It also lets them know that the magazine is doing something special for its readers. Additionally, I chose yellow as colour because it reminds the audience of the puffs on the front cover.

Above is the fifth developments to the contents page. I have now added the text which explains the main image, this again is in white and in the same font as the subheadings so the page looks professional. I have also enlarged the 'A' to mark the start the of the paragraph so the audience will notice it and also showing another convention of existing magazines. Furthermore, the text for the two smaller images again has been added one in white and one in red as I felt this broke up the page from using too much white text therefore preventing it looking busy.
Main Image text:
An insight into what one day in the life of Kelsey Jones is like. Come with us on this rare occasion to see Kelsey at a photo shoot.

Smaller Image text - Olly Murs tour:
Secrets from the 2012 tour and what 2013 has in store!

Smaller Image text - Festival Fashion:
Festival season is here! Get the latest trends!

Above is the final construction of my contents page. Finally, I have added the page numbers and articles under their correct subheadings. Looking closely at my flat plan I worked out what subheadings the articles were categorised in and therefore could place the ones I felt would interested the audience the most in the bank/drop down menu. I chose to have white text as it stands out against the mauve background and was clear for my audience to read, I used red for the page numbers to highlight their importance and also so that the audience noticed them. Again, I used the same font as the subheadings and text for the images so that the page looked authentic.

Final Font Cover

Below is my final music magazine front cover.

Here is the completed and finished version of my music magazine front cover. I am very pleased with the end result especially after making changes due to audience feedback as it has improved. As you can see I have added the price of the magazine which is just above the barcode, I chose yellow as this would standout to my audience. I have also included a website in red just under the masthead as this can be seen easily by he reader also connoting its importance. The masterhead of my music magazine is 'RIFF' it is called this after asking for feedback from my target audience, it was decided this was the best name because the main sound of indie music is made from a guitar riff. I enlarged the text so that it could be seen clearly and chose black, as it stood out against the background as it is now unique to my magazine it makes it easily recognisable. For the rest of the text I used the font 'Marcelle script' as it is easy to read and makes the cover look stylish otherwise my music magazine would not get purchased. I chose red, white and yellow as the text colour because it contrasted against their backgrounds but also because I wanted my magazine to be unisex therefore selected colours that were not gender specific. I think that the text and colours flow nicely around my cover tying it yet all standing out individually. Furthermore, I used circles for the puffs and stars for the rating as I thought this was unique to my magazine and people would recognise them if I used them with each issue. I am very pleased with the main image I had chosen to use as the background as the mise en scene for my artist I chose very carefully after doing research into the genre for example the artist is wearing a vintage leather jacket, high waisted shorts and tights which one of the aspects of the gene was vintage clothing. Also I had the artist put her hair in a messy bun as again this was a convention of the genre. Moreover, I think that my target audience would purchase my music magazine because I have included all the conventions of an existing magazine and focused on using the right features, mise en scene to get across the genre of indie. Additionally, presenting features such as 'The Vaccines new album given four stars' shows the audience that indie bands/artists are featured within which they will be interested in reading about.

Audience feedback

I have shown media students both in year 13 and 12, my target audience and media teachers my last version of my music magazine front cover as I wanted know what was good and bad so I could make adjustments for my final front cover. From looking over the feedback I received everyone commented on how they liked the main image and colour scheme of my magazine. The continued to say they liked how I had represented the genre throughout the page getting across to the audience that the genre was indie. However all the feedback suggested two improvement which was to add a price to my magazine and to add a web address. I am pleased with the feedback and am grateful to those who told me about adding a price and a website as both had completely slipped my mind when constructing therefore will no doubt be adding these to my final front cover.

Below are the feedback forms I received:

Construction Of Front Cover

Below is a number of screen shots showing the developments to the final edition of my music magazine front cover. I previously blogged the picture I was going to use as the main image and why. I will explain with each image what I have changed, edited and included. This was all done using three software programmes which were Photoshop, InDesign and Picmonkey so that I had a variety of tools to use and play around with. Additionally, to broaden my knowledge of using these programmes and constructing a magazine front cover.

Above is the first stage in creating my magazine front cover. As you can see I have taken the main image and  used it for the background of the cover, I positioned the artist so that when it came to adding the conventions she was still clearly seen by the target audience. Furthermore, I added the title 'RIFF' to the masterhead using a font called 'Bleeding Cowboys', I thought this font was effective as it is unique to my magazine and looks visually appealing to the audience. Continuing with construction, I re sized and shaped geometric shapes, rectangle and circles seen above, for the overlay of my anchorage text, sell lines, skyline and puffs. I choose black as I wanted the text to be in white and felt this was the best colour to make the text stand out, also I chose a light red/pink colour for the puffs as I wanted them to catch the eye of the audience.

Above is the second stage in constructing my magazine front cover. As you can see I have now added the barcode at the bottom of the cover, this is so checkout tills in shops will be able to scan the magazine for purchase. Reviewing my magazine I noticed that the rectangle overlay I placed for the background of the sell line text was not joined the the bottom sell line overlay making the magazine look messy and unprofessional therefore when it comes to my next editing stage I will make sure this is corrected.

Above is the third stage of creating my magazine front cover. As you can see I have now corrected the faults that I noticed in the previous screen shot therefore improving the neatness of the cover. Furthermore, I have also added anchorage text which explains the main image and gives the audience an idea of what the main feature is to entice them, as stated previously the text is white so it stands out against the black overlay and is clear for the audience to see and read. Additionally, I have also added the sell line text, this gives the audience information about other articles that are inside the magazine. Again using white text but chose to use read as the subheading of 'Latest!' and bullet dashes to draw the audiences attention across the cover.

Above is the fourth construction of my magazine front cover. I have now added the skyline text which states 'Look inside! For Pete Doherty's meltdown' this is more information for the audience about a feature that occurs inside the magazine, using a story involving a meltdown will more than likely grab their attention. I am keeping in with the colour scheme of the magazine as I continued to use the white text but again to catch the attention of the audience I used red for the exclamation mark. Alongside this is the date and issue printed in the top right hand corner presenting another convention of existing magazines. Furthermore, I then included the bottom sell line text which states 'The Vaccines new album given four stars', this tells the audience that other indie artists/bands are also featured inside and that my magazine has given them a review for their latest music, I used star symbols to represent the rating as this makes the cover authentic and interesting for the reader.

Above is the final additions to my music magazine front cover. Lastly, I added the text for the puffs. I chose the colour yellow as I wanted it to stand out against the colour of the puff itself and also to stand out to the audience making sure that they did not miss the information. Both puffs are advertising pages within the magazine whether it be 'Get your festival tickets here' which indie music is prone to playing at therefore would interest my audience or '20 greatest indie tracks' again promoting the genre and audience my magazine is appealing to.

Choosing Magazine Masterhead

As I have everything that I need to begin constructing my music magazine I have asked my target audiences feedback for what they suggest is the best masterhead and title for the magazine.

I am an A Level Media student and would like your help choosing which name best suits my music magazine of the genre Indie. (Tick one)
Unique
Vibes
Riff
Set the stage
Music box

I asked 10 participates to vote on which name they liked best for my music magazine, 8/10 suggested riff as they thought that it best suited the genre and style of indie.
I was happy with this choice as I agree with my target audience that Riff is the best name because it suits the genre perfectly as I have found out from research that the sound of most indie bands and artists is made from a guitar riff.

Making Of The Magazine - Flat Plan

As I have now got all my final images for my magazine I have decided to create a flat plan as it can help me put together my magazine. A flat plan is boxes in a grid which each individually describe the content on that specific page e.g. Feature story. A flat plan enables you to see the entire magazine layout in abbreviations,  it will help when organising pages and working out where best to place each article. After completing the publication you can see which page numbers are assigned to which page.

Below is the flat plan for my music magazine:

Making Of The Magazine - Photography

I have now taken all the photos that I need for my front cover, contents page and double page spread. Below I am going to post the shots that I took and discuss the location, costume, hair, make-up, camera shots, camera angles, gesture codes and lighting. I will also discuss how I edited some of the shots so they became effective for my magazine.

The location for this shot was a cinema room with dark mauve walls, I choose this dark location as I wanted the model to be the sole focus of the picture along with it enabling me to create a shadow around the model when it came to editing. Not a lot of lightening was used because of those reasons. The model is wearing a vintage black leather jacket with fur round the collar, high wasted denim shorts on top of tights. The model has her hair in a 'messy bun' as the indie image is seen to be slightly 'scruffy'. Following the feedback from my target audience the model is also not wearing much make-up therefore looking natural. I had the model put her hands in her pockets and lean towards the camera giving a direct mode of address to the audience however felt that this shot did not show enough personality or attitude therefore I will not be using this shot for my magazine.

This is a centered, long shot, again taken in the dark cinema room for the same effect as the previous shot. The model is still in the same costume, hair and make-up as before to reflect the indie image. As before, I directed the model to put her hands in her pockets lean towards the camera making the audience the direct mode of address. As you can see the model is now pouting showing she has attitude which I wanted as I would like my artist to be giving off a persona. I am happy with this shot therefore will be editing it so it is effective for my magazine.

Taking the shot previous, I used Photoshop to 'crop' the image slightly as you can see in the previous picture just at the bottom there was a different shade of purple therefore making this shot precise. I continued to use another photo editing site called PicMonkey where I put mauve lip tint onto my model, this was so she looked unique and showed her personality to the camera which added to the indie image.

My next step was to add the shadow effect I spoke about in the very first shot, to do this I used a photo editing site called Pixlr. I used the brush to glide over the areas where I wanted a shadowing effect to happen, as you can see above I chose each corner of the shot forcing light onto my model, connotating her importance. I have stated in a previous post that I got the idea from the music magazine NME when they featured Noel Gallagher shown below:

Although my image compared to this one looks very different, my original idea came from this. I have been creative and made mine suit my music genre so it is unique. Furthermore, I am now happy with this picture and have now created the main image for my music magazine front cover.

The location for this shot was a room similar to the one I used for the front cover main image, I choose this location as it was a contrast to the last one, as it lets in loads of light as well as light coloured walls. The model is wearing a plain white tee, short denim waistcoat, a retro skirt and converse. The model has her hair down this time but back combed to give off the 'messy' look. The model is again wearing natural makeup, all to fit into the indie image. I asked the model to play around with the added prop of the electric guitar as I wanted the shot to look natural.  I was happy with this shot therefore went on to edit.

Taking the previous shot I went onto Pixlr and used a tool called airbrush, I smoothed out the models face so that she looked relaxed. I then continued to use another tool called colour splash where it turns the image black and white and you go over the areas you would like with a brush to refill in the colour. As you can see above I choose to colour in the electric guitar as I thought this would make the image look striking and appeal to my target audience. In addition, I used Photoshop to boarder my image giving it an authentic look.  Therefore I am now happy with this image and will be using it for the main image on my contents page.

This shot is a centered  long shot taken in the same location as the image above for the same reasons, taking advantage of the lighting. The model has her hair down (however I added an accessory of flowers), a plain white tee, a fur waistcoat, tie die pink denim sorts, brogues and sunglasses again to project the indie image. I asked the model to stand as if she was advertising the outfit, which she did therefore was happy with the outcome. I can now edit.

Taking the shot previous I used the colour splash tool from Pixlr like before as I wanted to highlight the outfit the model was wearing, however I did not think it had worked as well as the last image therefore changed ideas and played around with  tools on Photoshop to get the effect below:

As you can see I applied an effect from Photoshop to my image and felt that it worked as it gave the picture a vintage look again reinforcing the genres image. Pleased with the end result, I will be using this image as a smaller picture for my contents page advertising for my readers to get their festival clothes ready for summer.

Above is a shot I took from Olly Murs' tour book last year, I re sized and cropped this image in Photoshop. I chose Olly Murs' as it is well known that he loves to wear vintage clothing, also has similar sounding music to most indie artists. I will use this shot as another smaller image on my contents page advertising an article about "all the secrets from Olly's 2012 tour and what he has planned for this year".

This is a centered, wide shot, taken landscape. I used the location of the dark mauve cinema room as I wanted the photos to look professional e.g. Playing acoustic guitar in a recording studio. The model wears outfit, makeup, hair as in the previous image for the font cover. I directed the model to look down towards the camera making the audience the direct mode of address whilst holding the prop, trying to make a connection with them. However after reviewing this shot, the angle is not great and the model looks unnatural just holding the guitar therefore I will not be using this shot.

This is a centered, mid shot again location, mise en scene the same. I really liked this shot as I felt the model looked relaxed playing the guitar, she was positioned well and came across like she was enjoying her music. However felt that it could be taken a little wider. Furthermore, I also wanted the light to bounce of the guitar adding personality to the instrument which I think would attract my audience. Therefore decided to re take the shot.

As stated above, I wanted to take the shot a little wider, which I have now done and I also wanted the light to bounce off the guitar which I also managed to achieve. Satisfied I now had the elements to the image I wanted, I went onto PicMonkey and applied the mauve lip tint to the model, this was so that the font cover and double page spread would interconnect nicely, showing continuity. However I still felt there was something missing, hence playing around with different effects and tools on Photoshop.

After trying out different tools and effects on Photoshop, I found this effect which I thought was perfect for the image as it now looks, edgy, stylish and vintage which I am trying to get across to my target audience so that they will be interested in my magazine. As this is now complete it will be the main image on my double page spread.

This mid shot would be perfect for my double page spread as it shows the artist caught off guard, they are laughing which would make the audience want to find out what the artist is laughing at and also would feel connected to the artist by seeing them in a different light as they may have forgot that music professionals are normal, everyday people. However I did not like how one of her legs is positioned or that her hair was in her face therefore I will not be using it nevertheless it has left me with the idea to include an image of the artist laughing.

Similarly to the shot above, this is a great caption as the artist is showing that they have let their guard down which would come across well to the audience however for some reason the shot has blurred around her face therefore spoiling the image leaving it unable to use.

Unlike the previous two this shot of the artist laughing has come out well, I like the position and gestures of this image. The artist is enjoying herself but not to much so that the audience will think it is genuine and believable. I do not think it is perfect as the models face needs smoothing and I think the shot is a little too wide but overall I am pleased therefore will be using this image.

I have airbrushed the models face using a tool on Pixlr, added the mauve lip tint and a slight cheek blusher on PicMonkey although visually it is not perfect however knew that once an effect was added it would  smooth the lip tint out. For this image, I wanted to create three versions as smaller photos for the double page spread therefore to keep in with the rest of the images being used I put similar effects to show continuity throughout the magazine.

Above are the final three versions of this image that I have selected to feature on the double page spread as smaller images. I think this will appeal to my target audience as it will catch their eye, I have never seen it be done in a music magazine before which makes mine stand out and I also think it makes my magazine unique giving something extra for its readers. In addition, I like the style of all the images I have created and choose for my magazine as I feel that the images look like they were taken as part of a photo shoot along with the featured story of the magazine.
