Research, Impact and Planning Of My Magazine Identity

Before taking the photography for my music magazine I wanted to establish a brand identity of how I would like my artist to be represented in their genre and according to my target audiences needs. Through researching the genre of my artist and my target audiences needs it can then impact my work so I can eventually plan the representation and brand identity of my music magazine. For example, by researching it will enable me to know the correct shots I need to take for my images.
Below is a three part process that shows my research and the impact it has had on my planning.

Research
What I have found out about the genre and artists of that genre:
Indie is a subculture of music that is independent and unique. It is not a definite style yet bands influence each other therefore creating a similar sound. The sounds are made by simple instruments, usually an original guitar riff which is accompanied by soft vocals with powerful and emotional lyrics.
The typical image of an artist in this genre is vintage clothing, often seen as quite ‘out there’ and brave, uses a lot of accessories to accompany their outfit e.g. watches, hats, scarf’s and rope bracelets.
What I have found out about my target audiences needs:
From the questionnaire that I did for my research I found out that my audience expected a natural looking artist with a guitar as the instrument used. Also the artist would be young and typically a male, in vintage clothing.
The style of the magazine to be quite unique yet understated.
What I have found out about existing magazines for this genre and their target audiences:
One famous indie genre existing magazine is NME. I can tell that this magazine is indie because the bands and artists that are used for the front cover is of this genre. Main images are usually centered mid and close up shots. I can also tell by the content of the magazines articles, interviews, advertisements and reviews are again of bands/ artists of indie genre. I know their target audience is both males and females as the artists featured on the front cover and throughout are also male and female. Older teenagers and younger adults would be the age range for this magazine as it focuses on the current music of today, however will only appeal to individuals that are interested in this genre as it is not versatile to other genres. Colour scheme is not gender specific therefore interests both males and females. Font is bold and clear for the reader to see. Style is kept simple, as the layout which as not to busy.

Impact
My artist and their image:
From my research in indie genre and artists my artist is going to have a unique musical style, which is quite soft but with emotional lyrics and will need to play the guitar.
My artists’ image will be vintage clothing, not typical clothing everyday people would wear with significant accessories.

Target Audience
My artist will need to be playing the guitar, young and natural looking. My audience also said the artist should be male however I am going to go against this convention.
My magazines brand identity and mode of address:
Target audience
Identity of my brand will be indie, for this to come across to my target audience I would need to include a natural looking model, they have to be young and wear vintage clothing. Also the magazine needs to be unique looking yet subtle.

Existing magazines
The artist featuring on the front needs to be of indie genre, also any interviews, reviews and other content in my magazine will need to be indie artists/bands. Feature both males and females on different issues of the magazine to get across to the unisex audience. Also include current, update music as my target audience are older teenagers and younger adults. Make sure colour scheme is not gender specific, font is bold and clear for the audience, the style is simple and the layout too so that it does not look busy.

Planning
Mise en scene (Models, props, location, lighting):
One female model, young and natural looking in vintage clothing e.g. leather jacket. Props will be a guitar and a chair. Location will be somewhere with a dark back drop as I would like the photo shot to be quite formal with my artist as the main focus. Lightening will be dark but highlighting will be on my artist e.g. spotlight.

Camera shots/angles:
Medium or close up shot with the angle centered for the front cover. A long shot at a centered angle for the double page spread.
My magazines title, layout, photography, style, colours, fonts, contents:
Photography for my magazine will be a close up shot that is centered  The model needs to be natural. Layout of the magazine should not be too complex so it does not look busy.
Style kept simple but effective for the target audience. Colour scheme should be neutral to avoid gender specific ones otherwise some of the target audience will lose interest.
Big and bold font so it is clear for the reader to see however make it unique so it is referring back to the genre. Content within the magazine needs to be related to other indie artists and bands keeping in with the genre.
