Research - Analysing School Magazines
The name or masterhead of this school magazine is 'college'. The text is in a large size therefore it is clear to the audience what it is called and what audience the magazine is directed at, also the colour green stands out and attracts the audience as it is quite unusual to use this colour also against the black background it makes the colour very vibrant which will also grab attention.
The sell lines are filled with information and subheadings about what articles are featured within the magazine, this lets the audience know the variety of topics that are featured and are relevant to the readers. The colour scheme is carried through with the sell line text again using the same green but also with white as this will break up the front cover so that it isn't looking to busy which will disinterest the audience. These colours are also not gender specific therefore it appeals to both males and females which increase interest.
The main image is a mid shot of a student that attends the school or college, his persona is modern and popular but he is holding law books which shows he cares about his education this shows to readers that education can be popular which will also make them want to read the magazine. The image is striking as if the student is actually coming out of the front cover which again will catch the eye of the audience making them want to pick up the magazine.
The use of a puff in the form of a splat is very effective as it is a bright pink colour which stands out making sure you do not miss this bit of information. Furthermore there is a barcode situated near the bottom of the front cover which allows shops to scan the item for purchase but there doesn't seem to be a price located on the magazine therefore the barcode would be worthless. At the top of the page below the masterhead a website is printed which will allow for students to go on the website if they liked the magazine they can find out more information on the website. This school magazine also includes information about competitions and prizes in the skyline, this is a tool used in the layout to provide more information of what the magazine contains without the front cover looking to busy.
Overall I think this magazine is very successful, the front cover stands out due to the main image being striking to the audience with a 3D effect and the bold colours used to draw attention. The front cover does not look busy therefore the audience can clearly see what articles are available inside but not giving away all the content. The use of a puff is effective as it catches the eye of the reader making them read important information. The one criticism I would say about this school magazine is that the barcode is a great feature on the magazine however has no use if the magazine is not for sale, as there is not price situated it seems pointless to have it on there.
